About Breast Reduction

Breast reduction surgery removes excess breast tissue, fat, and skin to achieve a breast size more in proportion with your body. For many women, this procedure provides significant relief from physical symptoms and improves quality of life.

Who Is It For?

Breast reduction may be suitable if you experience:

The Procedure

Breast reduction is performed under general anaesthesia and typically takes 2-4 hours. I remove excess breast tissue, fat, and skin, then reshape the remaining tissue to create smaller, lighter breasts. The nipples are repositioned to a more youthful height.

The most common technique leaves an anchor-shaped scar around the areola, vertically down to the breast crease, and along the crease itself. For smaller reductions, a vertical (lollipop) technique with less scarring may be possible.

Recovery

You'll wear a supportive surgical bra for several weeks. Most patients can return to desk work after 2 weeks, though you should avoid heavy lifting and strenuous exercise for 6 weeks.

Swelling settles over several months. Scars will initially be red but fade significantly over 12-18 months.

Results

Most patients report immediate relief from physical symptoms. The results are permanent, though weight fluctuations, pregnancy, and ageing can affect breast shape over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Many women can still breastfeed after breast reduction, though some may have reduced milk production. If breastfeeding is important to you, discuss this during your consultation.

This depends on your starting size and goals. During consultation, we'll discuss what size would be proportionate to your frame while achieving the relief you're seeking.

NHS funding criteria vary by region and are often strict. Many patients choose private surgery for more predictable access and outcomes. I can advise on your options during consultation.
