Summary

Mastopexy is a surgical solution for lifting sagging breasts, often caused by ageing, weight changes, or pregnancy. It can be done on its own or combined with breast enlargement or reduction. Scars are necessary and vary by technique, but most fade over time. The recovery process includes wearing a supportive bra and waiting several months for swelling to settle. Despite the potential risks, most women are very pleased with their final shape and contour.

What is a Mastopexy?

A mastopexy is a breast uplift procedure designed to reposition and reshape breasts that have begun to droop or sag. It does not necessarily alter breast size unless combined with a reduction or augmentation. The operation typically lasts around two hours, with a short hospital stay, and delivers results that many women find life-enhancing.

Scarring Techniques

Scars are an essential part of this procedure, and two main techniques are used:

  • Anchor (Wise pattern) scar: A scar around the areola, vertically down to the breast crease, and along the fold underneath. Preferred when significant tissue removal is needed.
  • Lollipop (vertical) scar: A less extensive scar around the areola and straight down to the crease. It results in a smaller scar but may have a higher chance of requiring touch-up surgery.

In cases where implants are added during the lift, the incision pattern may vary depending on factors like nipple position and skin excess.

Recovery & Final Results

Following surgery, you’ll need to wear a supportive sports bra continuously for at least two months. Swelling and bruising are normal, and final results are typically visible after around six months. Breasts will settle into a more lifted position, but natural changes due to weight fluctuations or ageing will still occur over time.

Risks to Consider

Like all surgeries, breast uplift carries risks. These may include:

  • Infection or bleeding
  • Scarring (abnormal or thickened)
  • Temporary or permanent changes in nipple/breast sensation
  • Delayed healing (especially at junctions of scar lines)
  • Uneven results or asymmetry
  • Over or under-correction of nipple position
  • Difficulty breastfeeding
  • Difficulty interpreting future mammograms
  • Ongoing effects of gravity and ageing on results
  • Reactions to general anaesthesia

It’s important to discuss these risks with your surgeon during your consultation.

Satisfaction & Outcomes

Despite these risks, most women are highly satisfied with their new breast shape and the rejuvenated appearance that mastopexy offers. Complications are typically minor and resolve with appropriate care and follow-up.
