Stage 2 of 8

The Day Before Surgery

Final preparations and important instructions for the 24 hours before your blepharoplasty procedure.

Final Preparations

You're almost there. The day before surgery is about making final checks and ensuring you're ready both physically and mentally for your procedure.

Fasting Requirements

If you're having a general anaesthetic or sedation, you'll need to fast before surgery. Your specific instructions will be provided by the hospital, but typical guidelines are:

Critical: Fasting Guidelines

  • No food for 6 hours before your scheduled surgery time
  • Clear fluids only up to 2 hours before (water, black tea/coffee, diluted squash - no milk)
  • Nothing at all in the 2 hours before surgery

Important: Follow the exact times given by your hospital. These are strict safety requirements.

Personal Care

  • Shower and wash your hair the evening before - it may be a few days before you feel comfortable doing so again.
  • Remove all eye makeup thoroughly - use a gentle makeup remover and cleanse the area well.
  • Remove contact lenses - switch to glasses and don't wear contacts on surgery day.
  • Remove all jewellery, piercings, nail polish, and makeup - this includes facial piercings.
  • Don't apply any creams, lotions, or makeup on the morning of surgery.

What to Bring

Pack a small bag with these essentials:

  • Your ID and hospital paperwork
  • Dark sunglasses to wear when leaving the hospital
  • Button-up or zip-up top (loose and comfortable)
  • Slip-on shoes (avoid bending to tie laces)
  • Your prescribed medications and eye drops
  • Phone charger
  • Small snack and water for after the procedure (once cleared by staff)

What NOT to Bring

  • Valuables or large amounts of cash
  • Contact lenses (wear glasses instead)
  • Heavy makeup or hair products

Mental Preparation

It's completely normal to feel a mix of excitement and nervousness the day before surgery. Here are some tips to help you stay calm:

  • Get a good night's sleep - try to maintain your normal bedtime routine. Avoid caffeine after midday.
  • Stay hydrated - drink plenty of water throughout the day (but remember the fasting rules closer to surgery).
  • Avoid strenuous activity - keep things light and relaxed.
  • Review your recovery space - make sure everything is set up and ready for when you return home.
  • Trust the process - you've chosen an experienced surgeon and prepared thoroughly. You're in good hands.

Pro Tip

Set out your post-surgery clothes and essentials the night before. You'll want easy, comfortable button-up or zip-up tops that don't require pulling over your head. Have your dark sunglasses ready by the door.
