Stage 2 of 8

The Day Before Surgery

Tomorrow is your surgery day. Here's everything you need to know about final preparations, fasting, and what to expect.

Today's Tasks

Shower and Hygiene

Shower thoroughly today using antibacterial soap if available. Wash your chest area well. Remove any nail polish. Don't apply any lotions, perfumes, or deodorant after showering.

Prepare Your Recovery Space

  • Set up a comfortable resting area with pillows to keep you elevated
  • Place essentials within easy reach - medications, phone, water, remote controls
  • Prepare easy meals or have frozen meals ready
  • Put your surgical bra and front-opening top where you can easily access them

Fasting Requirements

Essential for Safety

Following fasting guidelines is essential for safe anaesthesia. If you don't follow these requirements, your surgery may need to be postponed.

  • No food for 6 hours before your admission time
  • Clear fluids only (water) until 2 hours before admission
  • No chewing gum, sweets, or milk-based drinks
  • Take prescribed medications with a small sip of water if instructed

What to Pack

  • Front-opening top (button-up shirt or zip hoodie)
  • Comfortable loose trousers or joggers
  • Slip-on shoes (no laces to tie)
  • List of current medications
  • Phone and charger
  • Something to read or watch while waiting
  • Hair tie if you have long hair

Leave at Home

  • Jewellery and watches
  • Valuables
  • Makeup
  • Contact lenses (bring glasses instead)

Hospital Arrival

You'll typically arrive 1-2 hours before your scheduled surgery time. The process includes:

  • Registration and paperwork
  • Meeting the anaesthetist
  • Final consultation with Mr Shoaib
  • Pre-operative markings on your chest
  • Changing into a hospital gown

What Happens After Surgery

Immediate Recovery

You'll wake in the recovery room feeling groggy. You may experience:

  • Tightness and soreness across your chest
  • Swelling - your breasts will look larger than your final result
  • Possible nausea from anaesthesia (medication available)
  • You'll already be wearing your surgical bra

Going Home

Most patients go home the same day, once you've:

  • Had something to eat and drink
  • Been to the toilet
  • Received your post-operative instructions
  • Been given your pain medications

Critical Requirement

A responsible adult must collect you and stay with you for at least 24 hours. You cannot be discharged without these arrangements confirmed.

Tonight

Get a good night's sleep. Try to relax - feeling nervous is completely normal. Avoid alcohol and eat a light, healthy dinner. Set your alarm to allow plenty of time in the morning.
